Barley Straw Prevents Algae Growth

Floating one 8oz. bale of barley straw per 1,000 gallons of water is an easy, all-natural, chemical-free prevention for unsightly algae blooms. As the barley decomposes, it releases natural elements that halt algae growth and remove odors. The colder the water, the longer it takes the barley's cleaning properties to kick in, so it's best to get started in early spring. Add new bales before the old ones are completely decomposed.

Keep in mind that this process does not get rid of existing algae; it merely halts its growth. And never fear, the barley straw method is fish and plant safe, a fact that European pond owners have known for centuries.
