Splash Test before Treating

Before applying stain or clear coat to your deck (especially if it's new), splash water on various parts of the wood. If the water isn't completely absorbed in 15 minutes, the wood will not properly absorb any coatings. New decks may need several weeks of weathering, and old decks may need to be treated with wood restorer.
